Herbalife fibre in the UK: Oat Apple Fibre or Fibre Concentrate?

Carolina — HerbalStoreUK

The short answer: they do the same job in two different ways. Oat Apple Fibre is a powder, with more fibre per serving and both kinds of fibre. Fibre Concentrate is a liquid, quicker to make, and it brings calcium and vitamin C with it. For a lot of people the decision is made by neither of those things — it is made by the allergens.

Herbalife now sells two fibre products in the UK, and they are not versions of each other. One is a powder, one is a liquid. They use different fibres, from different plants, and they declare different allergens. This page puts them side by side.

What Oat Apple Fibre is for

It is the fuller of the two. One scoop is 5 g of fibre, drawn from six plants — apple, oat, maize, soya, citrus and chicory — and it carries both soluble and insoluble fibre rather than just one kind. Herbalife's own note on it is that oat grain fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk.

Practically, it is a powder, which means it goes anywhere: water, juice, a Formula 1 shake, or straight into your morning porridge. It lives in the cupboard and nothing happens to it once opened.

What Fibre Concentrate is for

It is the easier of the two to actually drink. One tablespoon in three quarters of a glass of water and it is done — no shaker, no lumps, and it tastes of orange rather than of fibre. The fibre itself is Nutriose®, a soluble fibre made from wheat that dissolves without changing the taste.

Each serving also carries calcium, which contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes, and vitamin C, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system — 15 % of the reference intake of each. That is the part Oat Apple Fibre does not do.

The allergens are what most people should check first

This is the part that usually decides it, and it is the one thing the two products do not have in common.

Oat Apple Fibre contains oat and soya. It is not declared gluten free.

Fibre Concentrate contains wheat. The dextrin used is a gluten-free wheat dextrin, so the finished product does carry a gluten-free claim on the pack — but wheat is still declared as an allergen.

Two things follow from that. First, gluten free and wheat free are not the same thing: if you are avoiding wheat itself rather than gluten, the gluten-free claim on Fibre Concentrate does not help you. Second, and more usefully: the two products cover for each other. If oat or soya is the problem, take the Concentrate. If wheat is the problem, take the powder.

Whichever you choose, read the pack you receive — that is the definitive statement, not this page.

One rule that only applies to Fibre Concentrate

Do not mix it with liquids above 25 °C. Herbalife's own instruction is that heat can affect the vitamin C in it, so it goes into cold or room-temperature water, not into tea, not into hot milk. It also needs to go in the fridge once you open the bottle, and to be used within 30 days.

Oat Apple Fibre has neither restriction. If you want to stir fibre into something hot, that is the one to buy.

What each one costs

  Pack Servings Fibre per serving
Oat Apple Fibre £27.40 30 5 g
Fibre Concentrate £48.60 33 3 g

What separates the two on price is the format, the orange flavour, and the calcium and vitamin C that Fibre Concentrate carries. These are our current prices, both below Herbalife's list price.

Still not sure? Pick the line that sounds like you

  • “I just want the most fibre per serving.” → Oat Apple Fibre
  • “I never remember to make the powder up.” → Fibre Concentrate
  • “I avoid oats or soya.” → Fibre Concentrate
  • “I avoid wheat.” → Oat Apple Fibre
  • “I want it in my porridge or my shake.” → Oat Apple Fibre
  • “I want something that tastes like a drink, not like a supplement.” → Fibre Concentrate
  • “I have no fridge space.” → Oat Apple Fibre

Worth being clear about. The only claims made on this page are the ones printed on the two labels: that oat grain fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk, that calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes, and that vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Neither product is a medicine and nothing here is nutritional advice. Enjoy both within a balanced and varied diet, as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take both?

Yes. Herbalife products are designed to be taken alone or together, as long as you follow the directions on each label. Plenty of people use the powder at breakfast and the liquid later in the day simply because it is easier to make.

Which one has more fibre?

Oat Apple Fibre, at 5 g per serving against 3 g. It also carries insoluble fibre as well as soluble, which Fibre Concentrate does not.

Which one is gluten free?

Fibre Concentrate carries a gluten-free claim on the pack, even though it is made with wheat dextrin — the dextrin itself is gluten free. Oat Apple Fibre is not declared gluten free. Note that wheat is still an allergen in Fibre Concentrate, so gluten free does not mean wheat free.

Are both suitable for vegans?

Yes, both labels state they are suitable for vegans. The rest of the range is in our guide to what is vegan and what is not.

Can I put either of them in a Formula 1 shake?

Yes, both. Oat Apple Fibre stirs into the shake as a powder. Fibre Concentrate can be added too, as long as the shake is cold — nothing above 25 °C. The official shake preparations are here.

Can I put them in a hot drink?

Oat Apple Fibre, yes. Fibre Concentrate, no — do not mix it with liquids above 25 °C.

Do either of them contain sugar?

Both are sugar free, and both carry 0.1 g of naturally occurring sugar per serving. Oat Apple Fibre has no artificial sweeteners; Fibre Concentrate is sweetened with steviol glycosides from stevia leaves.

Do I need a coach or a membership to buy either?

No. You order here the same way you would from any other shop. If you would like a hand choosing, write to info@herbalstoreuk.com.
