Herbalife protein snacks in the UK: crisps, bars and which to pick

Carolina — HerbalStoreUK

Four protein snacks, and they are genuinely different. One is savoury, two are sweet, and one is not a snack at all — it replaces a meal. If you are vegan there is exactly one you can eat, and it is probably not the one you would guess.

"High in protein" is printed on all of them, so it tells you nothing about which to buy. What actually separates them is the format, how much protein is in one unit, and what is in the ingredient list. Here they are side by side.

The vegetarian question, because it catches people out

Three of the four are suitable for vegetarians. The one that is not is the one most people assume is fine.

Protein Bars are neither vegan nor vegetarian. They contain milk proteins, and they contain gelatin, which is animal-derived. It is in the ingredient list, not in the allergen line, so it is easy to miss.

Protein Chips are the only vegan one. The protein is pea protein isolate, and there is no dairy in them at all.

H24 Achieve Bars and the Formula 1 Express Bar are suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans — both contain milk.

If you are avoiding animal products across the rest of the range, we go through it product by product here.

Protein Chips — the savoury one

Also sold as protein crisps, which is what most people in the UK would call them. Eleven grams of pea protein a pack, popped with heat rather than fried, which is why they carry 50 % less fat than fried potato crisps. Vegan, gluten free, in a box of ten single-serve packs.

These are the one to buy if what defeats you is the afternoon, not the appetite. A sweet protein bar at four o'clock is still a sweet thing; a bag of savoury crisps is a different craving entirely, and for a lot of people it is the one that actually gets eaten.

Protein Bars — the everyday one

Ten grams of protein a bar, 137 calories, in a carton of fourteen — a fortnight at one a day, which is why it is the cheapest per unit of the four. Each bar also carries seven vitamins, including B6 and B12, which contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

Two things worth knowing before you order. They contain 11 g of sugar a bar — this is a chocolate-coated snack bar, not a low-sugar product. And, as above, the gelatin means they are not vegetarian.

H24 Achieve Bars — the training one

Twenty-one grams of protein in one bar, 210 calories, low in sugar, no artificial colours or flavours, box of six. It is also Informed Sport certified, meaning a sample from the batch was tested by LGC's anti-doping laboratory and found to contain no banned substances. If you compete in anything tested, that certification is the reason to choose this bar over the others.

Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, which is the claim behind eating one after training rather than instead of lunch.

One thing on the label worth reading. These bars are sweetened with maltitol, and the pack carries the standard warning that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects. One a day is the suggested use. It is not a bar to eat three of in an afternoon.

Formula 1 Express Bar — the one that is not a snack

This is the odd one out and the one most often bought by mistake. Fifteen grams of protein, 6 g of fibre and 25 key vitamins and minerals in one bar, box of seven. It is a meal replacement for a calorie-controlled diet, not something to eat between meals.

Substituting two of the main daily meals of an energy-restricted diet with meal replacements contributes to weight loss; substituting one contributes to maintaining weight after weight loss. In plain terms: it does the job a Formula 1 shake does, without a shaker, milk or washing up. It costs a little more per meal than the shake and saves you the making.

Allergens, in one place

Read the pack you receive — that is the definitive statement. As published on the product pages:

  • Protein Chips — may contain soybeans.
  • Protein Bars, Vanilla Almond — contains milk, soy and almonds; may contain traces of other nuts, eggs, peanuts and gluten. The almond paste is an ingredient, not a trace, so this flavour is not for anyone with a nut allergy. For Citrus Lemon, write to us and we will read that carton to you before you order.
  • H24 Achieve Bars — contains soy and milk; may contain gluten, nuts, eggs and peanuts.
  • Formula 1 Express Bar — contains soy and milk; may contain eggs, cereals containing gluten, nuts, peanuts and sesame.

Worth being clear about. The only claims on this page are the ones printed on the packs: that protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, and that vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. None of these is a medicine, and nothing here is nutritional advice. Enjoy them within a balanced and varied diet, as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
