Herbalife power balls coated in coconut and seeds

Herbalife power balls: the official no-bake recipe (with a vegan version)

No oven, fifteen minutes of work, an hour in the fridge. This is Herbalife's own power balls recipe — oats, cocoa, coconut and a serving of Rebuild Strength — with Herbalife's vegan swap at the bottom.

The useful thing about these is when you eat them: mid-afternoon, when the alternative is whatever is in the office kitchen. They keep in the fridge, so you make them once and they cover a week.

The recipe

15 min prep · 1 hour chilling

  • 1 serving (50 g) Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength
  • 50 g oat flakes, ground
  • 30 g cocoa powder
  • 40 g desiccated coconut
  • 70 ml unsweetened soya drink
  • 1 tsp honey
  • Crushed nuts, desiccated coconut or toasted seeds to coat — optional
  1. Blend the oat flakes until fine, then tip them into a bowl with the coconut, cocoa and Rebuild Strength. Mix well.
  2. Pour in the soya drink and the honey and mix to a stiff paste. If the honey is too firm to work with, warm it slightly first.
  3. Roll into balls, then roll them in the nuts, coconut or seeds if you are coating them.
  4. Chill for at least an hour to set.

The vegan version

Herbalife gives the swap themselves: replace the Rebuild Strength with 2 servings (52 g) of Formula 1 Smooth Chocolate, and replace the honey with agave or maple syrup. Everything else stays the same.

Note that this doubles the chocolate in the mix, so if you are making the vegan version you can be lighter on the cocoa powder.

Worth knowing. Herbalife's own guidance is that a product delivers the nutritional benefits on its label only when prepared as the label instructs, and that when a Herbalife product is used in recipes involving cooking, the levels of some vitamins can be lower than the label values. These are a snack, not a meal replacement.

Allergens

Check the label of whichever protein you use. Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength and Formula 1 have different declarations, and the coating you choose adds its own — nuts especially. Full declarations are on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

How long do they keep?

Keep them in an airtight box in the fridge. They are at their best in the first few days and firm up as they sit.

Can I use a different protein powder?

Herbalife's own alternative is Formula 1 Smooth Chocolate, two servings in place of the Rebuild Strength. Other powders will work but the liquid may need adjusting, since they absorb differently.

My mixture is too dry to roll. What now?

Add the soya drink a teaspoon at a time until it holds together. Adding it all at once and then trying to correct with more powder rarely ends well.

Are these a meal replacement?

No. They are a snack. Only Formula 1 prepared as its label instructs is a meal replacement.
