Herbalife shake with water or milk? What actually changes in your glass

Carolina — HerbalStoreUK

Milk. Two scoops (26 g) of Formula 1 with 250 ml of cold semi-skimmed milk is the preparation on the pack, and the 18 g of protein it lists depends on it. Water on its own is not an official preparation: the shake comes out thinner, with 9 g of protein instead of 18 g. If you want to use water, the pack gives a version for that too — it is below.

This is one of the questions we are asked most, and the answer is on the label rather than in anyone's opinion. Here is what each option actually changes.

Why does the milk matter so much?

Because it is doing half the work. The 18 g of protein on the Formula 1 pack is for the powder and 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk together. The label gives 35 g of protein per 100 g of powder, so the two scoops on their own bring 9 g. The other 9 g comes from the glass of milk.

Take the milk away and use plain water, and you are left with the powder's share: 9 g. The shake also loses body — it is thinner and less filling to drink.

The milk brings sugar as well as protein, and the label is open about it: of the 18 g of sugars in a shake made with milk, 12 g come from the milk itself, which is lactose. Made with soy drink, the total is 15 g.

Figures from the Formula 1 label. *Our sum: 9 g from Formula 1 (35 g protein per 100 g of powder) plus the 15 g per serving printed on each Protein Drink Mix label.

Can I make it with water?

Yes — just not with water alone. The version Herbalife gives for water is two scoops of Formula 1 with two scoops (28 g) of Vegan Protein Drink Mix in 300 ml of water. The protein mix replaces what the milk was bringing, so it stays creamy, and it ends up with more protein than the milk version rather than less.

If dairy is not a problem for you, the regular Protein Drink Mix works the same way. It is the better choice at work or when travelling, when there is no fridge nearby.

Can I use oat, almond or coconut milk?

You can, but know what you are giving up. The only plant drink the label names is fortified soy, and there is a reason: soy drink has a similar amount of protein to cow's milk. Most oat and almond drinks have around 1 g of protein per 100 ml or less, so your shake ends up much closer to the water-only version.

If you prefer the taste of oat or almond, one honest option is to add a scoop of Vegan Protein Drink Mix to make up the difference.

What about lactose-free milk?

Lactose-free semi-skimmed milk is still cow's milk, with the lactose already broken down, and its protein is essentially the same. It is not named on the label, so this is our view rather than Herbalife's, but it is the closest swap there is. Formula 1 itself has no milk in its ingredients — its protein comes from soy.

Whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed?

The label specifies semi-skimmed at 1.5 % fat. Whole milk gives you about the same protein with more fat and more calories; skimmed, a few calories fewer. If you are using Formula 1 as part of a calorie-controlled diet, stick to semi-skimmed so the figures on the pack still describe what is in your glass.

One thing worth knowing. Formula 1 is a meal replacement when prepared as instructed on the label. Make it with water alone, or with a drink the label does not mention, and the nutrition figures and the meal-replacement claim on the pack no longer apply to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Herbalife shake better with water or milk?

With milk. 250 ml of cold semi-skimmed milk is the preparation on the pack, and the 18 g of protein it lists depends on it. With water alone you get 9 g of protein instead of 18 g, and a thinner shake.

How do I make Formula 1 with water?

Two scoops of Formula 1 plus two scoops of Vegan Protein Drink Mix (or Protein Drink Mix) in 300 ml of water. That is the version Herbalife gives for water.

Can I make a dairy-free Formula 1 shake?

Yes, two ways: with 250 ml of fortified soy drink, or with Vegan Protein Drink Mix and water. Both are on the label, and both are suitable for vegans.

Does Formula 1 contain milk?

No. Its protein comes from soy, and the allergens declared are soy and oat. Milk only comes in if you prepare it with milk or add the regular Protein Drink Mix.

Can I use oat or almond milk?

You can, but most have far less protein than cow's or soy milk, so your shake ends up much closer to the water-only version. The only plant drink named on the label is fortified soy.
