Herbalife chia and blueberry overnight oats in a jar

Herbalife overnight oats: the official chia and blueberry recipe

Fifteen minutes the night before, nothing to do in the morning. Herbalife's own overnight oats recipe uses Formula 1 Vanilla Cream and Protein Drink Mix together, so it covers the protein as well as the breakfast.

If the problem is that mornings are too rushed even for a shake, this solves it. You make it in a jar the night before and take it out of the fridge on the way past.

The recipe

15 min prep · overnight in the fridge

  • 1 serving (26 g) Formula 1 Healthy Meal, Vanilla Cream
  • 1 serving (28 g) Protein Drink Mix
  • 120 g fat-free natural yoghurt
  • 120 ml water
  • 50 g rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 15 g blueberries, lightly mashed
  • A few more blueberries to finish
  1. Put the yoghurt in a bowl and whisk the water into it.
  2. Mash the blueberries before they go in — Herbalife's own tip, and it is what spreads the colour and flavour through the whole jar.
  3. Add the oats, chia seeds, Formula 1, Protein Drink Mix and mashed blueberries. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Top with the remaining blueberries in the morning.

Why both powders

Formula 1 brings the flavour and the vitamin and mineral base; Protein Drink Mix brings 15 g of protein and keeps the texture thick rather than sloppy. The oats and chia do the rest — chia absorbs several times its weight in liquid, which is what turns this from a bowl of wet oats into something that holds a spoon.

Not a meal replacement. Formula 1 is a meal replacement when prepared as the label instructs — two scoops with 250 ml of milk. Once it goes into oats with yoghurt and fruit, the figures on the pack no longer describe what you are eating. This is a good breakfast; it is not a calorie-controlled meal replacement.

Allergens

Formula 1 contains soy and oat. Protein Drink Mix contains soy and milk. The yoghurt adds dairy. If you need it dairy-free, swap in Vegan Protein Drink Mix and a plant yoghurt — though that is our substitution, not Herbalife's recipe.

Frequently asked questions

How long do overnight oats keep?

Make them the night before and eat them the next morning. They will hold a second day in the fridge, but the oats keep softening.

Can I use a different Formula 1 flavour?

The recipe specifies Vanilla Cream, which is neutral enough to carry the blueberries. Smooth Chocolate or Banana Cream work too, but pick your fruit to match.

Do I have to use chia seeds?

They are what thicken it. Without them you get a looser, wetter bowl — still edible, but not the same thing.

Can I make several jars at once?

Yes, and most people do. Multiply everything and divide between jars before it goes in the fridge.
